From coin cake to custard cake, customers lined up, 'fighting' to buy as many as they could

Custard cake is a "popular" cake on social networks after cheese coin cake. Customers have to line up and wait for hours to buy cakes at a supermarket in Ho Chi Minh City.

At 9:25 a.m. on October 10, the first batch of custard cakes at a supermarket on Phan Van Tri Street, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City were released. Dozens of diners had lined up 30-60 minutes earlier, quickly buying out.

“I came here from District 8 to buy cake after watching videos online and was curious about the taste. I have never eaten this type of cake before. I came and waited 1,5 hours for a new batch of cakes to come out of the oven," a customer shared.

Accordingly, custard cake is known as a cake with a spongy crust, inside is a layer of soft, melty cream. The combination of these two ingredients has satisfied many diners who love sweets.

Recently, after a few clips saying "wingy" words about custard cakes on social networks, the cake that has been around for a long time suddenly became "hot" again. People lined up and waited to buy from morning to night at chain stores and supermarkets. Among stores in Ho Chi Minh City, Emart (Go Vap district, Thu Duc city) is one of the places with the largest number of customers coming to buy cakes.

According to an employee at Emart supermarket, currently the cake counter opens to sell 6 batches of custard cakes every day, each batch is about 2 hours apart. The number of cakes ranges from 900-1.000 pieces, increasing to 1.000-1.500 pieces on weekends. The number of cakes is divided equally into each box, each box has 3 pieces at a price of 28.000 VND/box. The cakes here have two basic flavors: milk cream flavor and chocolate flavor.

Previously, the number of customers was not overwhelming, so customers could buy comfortably. However, currently, because the supermarket does not have enough cakes, it limits each customer to buying a maximum of 2 boxes at a time. This employee also added that, in addition to selling directly at the counter, the supermarket also sells cakes through applications, so the number of cakes is difficult to meet customers' needs.

Pham Su (born 2002, student at Ho Chi Minh City Open University) went to Emart supermarket for two consecutive days to be able to buy cake. “The first day I arrived, it was so crowded that there was no cake left. The next day when I arrived around 1pm, I had to scramble to buy 2 boxes. To me, this cake tastes better than cheese coins, the price per box is quite reasonable," Pham Su shared.

By 10 a.m., there were nearly a hundred customers lining up waiting for the latest batch of custard cakes to come out of the oven. Many customers are afraid that coming in the afternoon or evening will be crowded, so they choose to go in the morning, but they still have to wait for hours to get the cake.

Duc Hieu (23 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) was also one of the people who had to line up to get a box of custard cakes at nearly 18 p.m. on October 22. “The number of visitors is unbelievable. For me, eating one cake is enough. It seems better to buy it and keep it in the refrigerator to eat later. The selling price is okay, but I guess it will only be popular for a short time," Hieu said.

When the amount of cakes at supermarkets did not meet people's purchasing needs, many cake shops and some individuals also took advantage of the opportunity and proactively imported cakes to sell. Ms. Ngoc Mai (from Lang Son) is one of the people importing custard cakes to sell. Ms. Mai said that people in Lang Son are also flocking to buy this type of cake.

“I imported cakes from a friend of mine. Different from the two basic flavors of custard, the cake now has many other flavors such as matcha, strawberry... Currently, I sell about 2-50 boxes per day, 100 boxes per box. The price is about 3-35.000 VND/box, I make a profit of 45.000-5.000 VND per box,” Ms. Mai shared.
